Khenpo Sangay Gyatso

Khenpo Sangay Gyatso was born in 1975 at Norbugang village in Pemagatshel District .In 1981, at the age of six, he had begun with the formal study on Buddhism under the Yogi Lama Ugyen Dorji,a student of His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche in the village of Norbugang in South-Eastern part of Bhutan. He studied under Lama Ugyen Dorji for seven years and completed Dudjom Terser, Preliminary Buddhist practices. In 1988 at the age of 13, he was enrolled as a monk at Dzongsar Institute in Bir, Himachal Pradesh,India. He undertook the courses such as the logic, grammar, monastic discipline and poetry. Khenpo completed his Degree in Shastri(Equivalent to Bachelor in Arts) with distinction in 1995 and Degree of Achary(Equivalent to M.A) with distinction in January 1997. In December 1997,he was conferred with the title of Khenpo and he taught students in the Institute for two years. Subsequently, following the instruction of root master, His Eminence Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpochhe, he underwent retreat for a year in Geyshing,West Sikkim in 2000.
Khenpo has received teaching and initiations from many extraordinary beings including the supreme heads of all the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism H.H Dalai Lama, H.H Karmapa, H.H Sakya Trinzin and H.H Penor Rinpoche, with whom he took his monastic vows in 1989. He received many advanced transmissions such as the complete Powa (Ejection of consciousness at death) from Drikung Chopha Rinpochhe among others.

Khenpo Sangay Gyatsho received his Masters Degree in Buddhist Philosophy in 1997. He had mastered in knowledge and skills in areas such as, the Vinaya,Abhidharma,Madhyanika,Prajnaparamitra,Pranamaandtrisamvara.Khenpo has also done the Six Root Philosophical Volumes and has shown the quality of a superlative instructor of these subjects. Therefore, Khenpo was appointed as the Abbot alias Head Instructor of Dewathang Shedra in 2000. Chokyi Gyatso Institute is a premiere school of Buddhist Philosophy of the Tibetan tradition established in 1972 and taught and practiced there diligently since his appointment at Chokyi Gyatso Institute for 20 years.


Another milestone in Khenpo Sangay Gyatsho's life has been the undertaking of the management of the Tshong Tshong Foundation from 2015. This Foundation was established to take care of the welfare of Chhoegar Dhuedhuel Phodrang Monastery established in 2012 during the visit of His Eminence Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpochhe. Currently, there are over thirty students and are provided with free meals, books, among others.
